Chapter 13

Nhalia Graves

It ended up taking Nina all day to finally get back to Houston, but as soon as she texted me with the address to where I could meet her, I quickly hopped in my car and headed where my GPS took me. I had been avoiding the media all day in fear of seeing something that was going to scare me crazy, and having been left with the advice of praying to God by Benji, I’d been doing just that. I didn’t know how to pray, or what to even say because a part of me felt like a hypocrite for wanting to turn to God now that all the damage had been done. I felt like I would deserve it if he turned his back on me and ignored me like I’d done Him my whole life, and even with the persistent thoughts fluttering through my mind that I was simply wasting my time, I was still slightly hopeful that he would at least look out for me. To know that I’d killed my own father was enough of a burden, but having to deal with the fact that everyone in the world also knew me to be a killer made me mentally weak.

Pulling up in front of the nice little brick building, it reminded me of the brownstones that I saw in the movies that were based in Harlem. There was a sign out front with Marcus Shields, my attorney’s name, in neat block letters and though it was after his usual hours of operation, I knew it was okay for me to come in. Nina’s car was already parked out front, and the main door was open. Walking into the neat little office, I followed a small hallway until I got to the opening of the first room.

“Nhalia,” Nina called my name, rushing toward me and wrapping me in a hug. She looked different, but I couldn’t tell what it was about her. Nina had always had a flawless fashion sense, but her aura felt different. Still, after all that I’d been through, I felt at home in her embrace.

“So, what’s the deal? Are they going to arrest me again, now that the body has been found?” I asked, biting my bottom lip in anticipation for what the lawyer had to say to me. He was sitting relaxed on the sofa with a glass of brown liquor and his tie loosened as if he’d had a long, stressful day.

“As of now, no official charges have been brought up against you, Nhalia. If they had something concrete, trust me, they would have brought you in by now,” he assured me.

“Well, what about the eyewitness? If they have someone who’s saying they saw me and now they have the body, wouldn’t that be all they need?”

“And that’s what we were just discussing before you got here. There is a chance that they can arrest and bring charges against you, even without recovery of the weapon,” Marcus explained to me, tossing back his drink.
